The Atlanta Braves made a minor transaction on Wednesday. According to MiLB-Transactions on Twitter, the Braves have signed infielder Hernán Pérez to a minor league contract.
Pérez – 31-years-old – has been around for quite a while, originally signed by the Tigers as a non-drafted free agent all the way back in July of 2007 as just a 16-year-old out of Venezuela. Since then, the do-it-all player has been part of several different organizations, including the Brewers, Cubs and the Nationals, along with numerous teams outside of the states. All in all, spanning 1,798 games across the majors, minors and foreign leagues, Pérez owns a .269/.308/.387 slash line, to go with 114 home runs and 236 stolen bases. The journeyman’s best days came back during the 2016-17 seasons while a full-time big league player with Milwaukee, in which he hit .266 with a combined 27 homers in 259 games altogether – good for an 84 wRC+. He also tallied 47 stolen bases in that span, highlighted by a career-high 34 steals in the former season.
Pérez hasn’t played in any games this season, though his most-recent numbers on offense aren’t too inspiring. Last season, in 23 games with the Brewers Triple-A club he hit well (.357 AVG), but in the majors with the Nationals he managed to go just 1 for 19 (.053 AVG). Pérez is a pretty solid defender, especially at second base, so perhaps he can provide some quality depth in the Braves organization.
